The Commissioner of Police in Ananbra State , Mr Nnaghe Itam has discouraged members of the public from patronizing street adoption of children.
He gave the advice at the Police Command Headquarters, Amawbia, while parading some child trafficking suspects arrested by the police in 2024.
According to him, the command rescued three children allegedly stolen from their parents in Bauchi State and sold in Anambra State.
Four suspects, including an illegal foster mother, were all arrested and have been helping the police in the investigation.
The Police Commissioner while describing the high rate of child theft and trafficking as worrisome, cautioned the people to always seek the legal means and process anytime they wish to adopt a child.
He therefore urged the public to assist the command in identifying the three rescued children so they can reunite them with their parents.
The Commissioner of Police also appealed to the public to share information about any suspicious activities, emphasizing that security is everyone’s business.
He stressed that with the collaborative initiative between sister agencies, vigilante and the state government support, the Police will even do more and better in 2025.
The Commissioner of Police expressed gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, for their support and zeal towards ensuring that crime was reduced to the barest minimum in the area.
He assured the public that the command was committed to consolidating its gains in crime prevention and restoration of law and order in Anambra state.
In an interview, some of the traffickers while confessing to the crimes narrated how they used a thirteen year old girl to kidnap and sell three different children at the cost of One Point Two Million Naira each before they were apprehended.
