The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Sadiq Umar Gombe, has called for unity, religious tolerance and constructive political engagement to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
Professor Gombe made the call during an Iftar (breaking of fast) gathering organised by Lilian Adebayo in Abuja.

The event brought together political leaders, party officials, civil society representatives and members of the media for reflection during the holy month of Ramadan.
Gombe said the gathering highlighted the spirit of unity, generosity and compassion associated with Ramadan.
According to him, such engagements provide opportunities for political stakeholders to interact and promote peaceful coexistence across party lines.

He noted that although many political actors attended the event, the gathering was primarily a religious and social engagement aimed at strengthening relationships.
The SDP chairman said Nigeria’s democracy would grow stronger when leaders promote dialogue, respect and shared national interest.
He also commended the media, describing it as the “fourth estate of the realm,” and acknowledged its role in promoting accountability and public awareness.
Also speaking at the event, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Adewole Adebayo, stressed the need to deepen citizens’ participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Adebayo said the spiritual lessons of Ramadan, including humility, justice and accountability, should guide the actions of political leaders.
He added that Nigeria’s religious and cultural diversity remains one of the country’s greatest strengths.
The SDP candidate urged political leaders and institutions to encourage greater voter participation in elections.
According to him, strong citizen participation is essential for credible elections and democratic legitimacy.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, called for policy adjustments in Nigeria’s electoral framework to encourage broader participation.
Dantalle expressed concern over some provisions in the electoral process which he said could limit citizens’ participation in politics.
He urged political stakeholders to support reforms that would strengthen Nigeria’s multi-party democracy and ensure inclusiveness.

The IPAC chairman also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to maintain strict adherence to electoral rules ahead of future elections.
The event ended with prayers for peace, unity and continued progress in Nigeria’s democratic development.
