The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, says former President Goodluck Jonathan’s decision to concede defeat in the 2015 presidential election helped save Nigeria’s democracy.
Usman stated this at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue in Bauchi state
She urged Nigerian politicians to emulate Jonathan’s peaceful approach to politics and place national interest above personal ambition.
According to her, Jonathan had always maintained that no political office was worth the blood of any Nigerian.
Usman said the former President demonstrated this principle by accepting the outcome of the 2015 election and helping the country avoid a major political crisis.
She said Nigeria’s democratic system has continued to benefit from the sacrifice Jonathan made at that critical moment.
The Labour Party chairman urged politicians preparing for the 2027 elections to respect democratic rules and avoid inflammatory statements capable of threatening peace.
She also questioned whether today’s politicians would be willing to make similar sacrifices in the interest of the country.
On the 2027 elections, Usman described the Labour Party as the most structured opposition party in Nigeria.
She called on political parties seeking a coalition to join the Labour Party, which she said has a strong presence across the country.
The dialogue was attended by former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice President Namadi Sambo, Governor Bala Mohammed, Peter Obi and other dignitaries.
The event, themed “Beyond Elections: Can Political Parties and the Judiciary Save African Democracy?”, was held in Bauchi State.
