The Labour Party has disowned Abayomi Arabambi, who reportedly instituted a suit seeking access to the academic records of Peter Obi, saying he is no longer a member of the party.
This is contained in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, in Abuja.
The statement says it initially refrained from reacting when the report circulated on social media but was compelled to respond after the story was published by mainstream newspapers, including the Punch and Vanguard.
It explains that its National Executive Council, NEC, suspended 25 members on March 18, 2026, over various infractions bordering on anti-party activities, with Arabambi among those affected.
According to the party, the suspension was subsequently ratified by its National Convention, the highest decision-making organ of the party, on April 28, 2026.
It states that following the ratification, the affected persons ceased to be members of the Labour Party, adding that no organ of the party had since revisited or reversed the decision.
It therefore maintains that Arabambi could not have instituted the suit as a member or representative of the Labour Party, having severed ties with the party.
The party was reacting specifically to reports describing Arabambi as a Labour Party chieftain over the legal action involving Obi’s academic credentials.
It adds that while declining to comment on the substance or validity of the case before the court, the Labour Party says its clarification was necessary to establish Arabambi’s current status.
It warns that any attempt by Arabambi to present himself as a chieftain or representative of the Labour Party was unauthorised and could, prima facie, amount to impersonation.
It states that its lawyers were reviewing the matter to determine appropriate legal and other steps, including a possible petition to relevant law enforcement authorities.
The Labour Party stresses that the statement had no bearing on the validity or otherwise of Arabambi’s claims against Peter Obi before the court.
It says the clarification was issued solely to correct the impression that Arabambi instituted the action as a Labour Party member and urged the media and the public to take note of his current status.
