The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national football team, the Flamingos, on their historic qualification for the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The party described the team’s achievement as a source of national pride and a welcome moment of joy for millions of Nigerians.
In a statement, the NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, praised the players for their determination, resilience and impressive performance throughout the competition.
The Flamingos secured their place in the final after defeating Brazil’s Samba Queens 3-1, ending the South Americans’ unbeaten run in the tournament.
The party noted that the team had demonstrated remarkable character, recovering from a 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening match to record a series of impressive victories.
It recalled that the Flamingos defeated two-time champions, North Korea, 3-1 in the group stage, handing the Asian side its first defeat in eight years.
The Nigerian girls also overcame Mexico 2-1 in the Round of 16, edged Venezuela 1-0 in the quarter-finals and defeated Brazil 3-1 in the semi-finals.
According to the statement, the team’s performance has given Nigerians something to celebrate at a time when many are facing economic hardship, hunger and rising living costs.
“You have done our country proud. Your victories have brought joy and renewed hope to millions of Nigerians despite the hardship caused by the policies of the ruling APC,” the statement said.
Ahead of Saturday’s final against Japan, the NDC urged the players to remain focused, maintain their winning spirit and give their best to secure the trophy for Nigeria.
The party assured the team of its full support, saying Nigerians would be united behind them as they pursue the historic victory.
The NDC expressed confidence that the Flamingos could make history by becoming the first African team to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
It added that the team’s achievement reflects the determination, talent and potential of Nigerian youths when given the opportunity to excel.
The statement added that with the party’s message a new Nigeria is possible under the NDC.
