Political leaders and members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) have been urged to put national interest above personal ambition.
Chairman of the NDC National Reconciliation Committee, Professor Pat Utomi, made the call during the inauguration of the committee in Abuja.
Professor Utomi said reconciliation is vital to nation-building and urged Nigerians to unite to restore the country’s leadership role in Africa.
He warned against allowing political differences to undermine Nigeria’s future.
He noted that Africa has abundant human and natural resources but continues to face negative perceptions due to political instability.
He urged Nigerians to work together for national development.
Utomi also called for greater support for young people, saying Nigeria’s large youth population provides an opportunity to raise a new generation of transformational leaders.
Earlier, the National Chairman of the NDC, Senator Cleopas Moses, inaugurated the committee and said its responsibility is to rebuild confidence and strengthen unity within the party.
He acknowledged that disagreements were inevitable during the primaries but urged members not to leave the party because of the outcome, stressing that the goal of winning the 2027 elections is more important than individual ambitions.
Senator Cleopas also criticised the Federal Government over insecurity and economic hardship, saying the NDC is determined to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative.
Co-Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Buba Galadima, described the assignment as challenging.
He blamed the current Electoral Act for making opposition party primaries difficult to manage and appealed to aggrieved aspirants to embrace reconciliation and work together for the party’s success.
The committee, chaired by Professor Pat Utomi with Alhaji Buba Galadima as Co-Chairman, will reconcile aggrieved members, review complaints arising from the party’s congresses and primaries, and submit its recommendations to the National Working Committee before campaign activities begin.
The committee was set up to reconcile aggrieved aspirants and party stakeholders after the party’s congresses, convention and primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
