The Labour Party has called on the Federal Government to declare a National State of Emergency in Nigeria’s teaching sector, to curb poor working conditions and inadequate welfare of teachers.
This is contained in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Ken Asogwa to mark the 2026 World Teachers’ Day in Abuja.
The statement says teachers play a critical role in shaping the nation’s future, but their welfare and working conditions remain a major concern.
It urges authorities to prioritise the training and retraining of teachers, improve learning conditions and provide the necessary tools for effective teaching.
The statement also calls for better remuneration and improved conditions of service, stressing that teachers should be adequately motivated to perform their responsibilities.
It cites developments in Abia State, where Governor Alex Otti has, according to the statement, fulfilled campaign promises made to teachers, as an example of what could be achieved through political commitment.
The statement urges teachers to support its candidates, promising to advance their welfare and improve the education sector.
It promises to remains committed to a Nigeria where teachers are respected, adequately rewarded and provided with the tools needed to shape the future of the country.
