Former National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, Chief Peter Ameh, has criticised the recent Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja, describing it as judicial overreach and a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
A statement signed by him in Abuja questioners why the court entertained an application filed by the Peace Movement Party, which he claimed is not a registered political party recognised by law.
The statement argues that the court had already delivered judgment on December 10, 2025, and should not have revisited the case except under exceptional legal circumstances, which did not exist.
According to statement, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the defendant in the original suit, did not appeal the judgment within the three-month period allowed by law.
It also notes that the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, had already conducted its primaries and produced candidates before the latest ruling.
The statement says the decision raises serious concerns about the independence of the judiciary and the finality of court judgments.
It further alleges that the ruling was aimed at weakening opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, accusing the ruling APC of using the courts to frustrate political opponents.
The statement calls on Nigerians to resist what he described as judicial manipulation and vowed that opposition supporters would pursue lawful actions, including peaceful protests, to defend democracy.
“For many Nigerians, this is not just an error of law; it is an assault on democracy,” Ameh states
