The New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, has urged members to close ranks and unite following the recognition of Dr. Agbo Major as the party’s National Chairman by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The development follows the appearance of Dr. Major’s name on INEC’s official portal, a move the party said complies with judgments of the FCT High Court and the Court of Appeal in Owerri directing the electoral body to recognise the party’s leadership.
Reacting to the development, Dr. Major described the recognition as a victory for the NNPP rather than for any individual.
“There is no victor and no vanquished. This was an internal disagreement within the party, and at the end of it, the NNPP will emerge stronger,” he said.
He noted that internal leadership disputes are common in political parties and expressed confidence that the NNPP would overcome its challenges through reconciliation and unity.
Dr. Major extended an olive branch to members who may be dissatisfied with the court decisions, urging all stakeholders to put aside their differences and work collectively to reposition the party.
“It is time for all of us to come together as brothers and sisters to rebuild and strengthen our party,” he said.
Reflecting on the party’s political journey, Dr. Major recalled that the NNPP made history during the 2023 general elections by producing its first elected governor after more than two decades of existence.
“Although we later lost the governor, it remains a significant milestone. We must build on that achievement as we prepare for the 2027 general elections,” he added.
He stressed that unity, discipline, and a shared vision would be critical to the party’s success in future elections.
Dr. Major also disclosed that party officials, including the National Secretary, would engage with INEC to seek clarification on the status of other national officers whose names are yet to be reflected on the commission’s portal.
