The leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Seriake Dickson, has formally received Kabir Garba Marafa into the party, outlining key expectations for the former lawmaker as he joins its ranks.
Speaking at the reception, Dickson described Marafa as an experienced and principled politician whose entry into the NDC is expected to strengthen the party’s presence, particularly in Zamfara State and the wider North-West region.
He said Marafa’s track record in public service places a responsibility on him to provide leadership, mobilise grassroots support, and contribute to the party’s vision of inclusive governance.
Senator Dickson added that the party is counting on Marafa to play a leading role in addressing key challenges in Zamfara, especially insecurity, while helping to promote development through policies focused on education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
According to him, Marafa is also expected to participate actively in the party’s internal processes, including future congresses and primaries, while supporting membership expansion and stronger party structures.
“This is not just about joining a political party; it is about commitment to service, leadership, and delivering results for the people,” Dickson said.
Receiving the party’s flag and membership card, Senator Kabir Marafa said his decision to defect from the African Democratic Congress to the NDC followed careful reflection and deep consideration of political developments.

He said political participation must be rooted in fairness and opportunity, stressing that leadership can only be tested when individuals are given the platform to serve.
Marafa recalled his role in the emergence of the All Progressives Congress in Zamfara State, noting that the state played a significant part in the party’s electoral success in 2015.
However, he expressed concern over what he described as inadequate recognition for those contributions, especially in political appointments and representation.
The former senator said his defection was not driven by personal ambition but by the need to align with a platform that reflects fairness, inclusion, and collective participation.
He also stressed the importance of internal democracy in strengthening Nigeria’s political system, urging parties to create enabling environments for members to contribute meaningfully.
Earlier, the National Chairman of the NDC, Senator Moses Zuwegeh, said the party is founded on a people-centred agenda focused on service delivery, inclusion, and national renewal.
Zuwegeh said the NDC represents service to women, youth, persons with disabilities, and all categories of Nigerians, adding that the party is positioning itself as a credible alternative platform ahead of future elections.
The event was attended by party officials and supporters, highlighted the NDC’s growing efforts to consolidate its base and expand its influence ahead of the next election cycle.
