Kogi East Senatorial candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Ameh, has condemned the reported attack, roadblock and intimidation involving the convoy of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benue State.
Ameh described the incident as unacceptable and a threat to democratic participation, urging relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and hold those responsible accountable.
A statement signed by him in Abuja says no Nigerian should be subjected to harassment, threats or unnecessary obstruction while exercising the constitutional right to move freely across the country.
The statement alleges that the roadblock and intimidation were carried out by individuals in Benue, reportedly with the backing of persons connected to those in power.
According to him, political influence must not be used to create fear, inconvenience or a sense of lawlessness, stressing that public roads belong to all Nigerians.
It also cites Sections 40 and 41 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantee citizens’ rights to freedom of association and movement.
According to the statement, any attempt to restrict Peter Obi’s movement or political activities on account of his opposition status would be a disturbing development for Nigeria’s democracy.
The statement calls on the Benue State Government to publicly condemn the incident and ensure that Obi’s visit to the state proceeds without further interference.
It maintains that public office carries the responsibility to protect citizens and uphold the rule of law, rather than empower individuals to intimidate political opponents.
According to the statement, Ameh urges the relevant security and law enforcement authorities to conduct a transparent investigation into the incident and establish those behind the reported obstruction.
It further calls for accountability, irrespective of the political affiliation or connections of anyone found to be involved.
According to Ameh Nigerians must continue to speak against actions capable of undermining political freedom, peaceful participation and the rule of law ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The statement adds that Benue State deserves leadership that protects the rights of all citizens, regardless of their political affiliation.
