The Abia State Government has approved plans to establish an SME Village and Innovation Hub in Aba as part of measures to strengthen economic growth and enterprise development.
Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti at Government House, Umuahia.
He said the proposed SME Village will provide a structured business environment for computer dealers, mobile phone sellers and repair technicians, while a one-stop Export Growth Lab and trade support facility at Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic is nearing completion and expected to commence operations before the end of the month.
According to the Commissioner, the initiative is aimed at removing bureaucratic constraints facing small businesses, manufacturers and exporters, and repositioning Aba as a competitive commercial hub.
Prince Kanu also announced that the Green Shuttle Mass Transit Scheme will transition fully to an electronic ticketing system after its pilot phase.
The reform, he said, will eliminate cash-based transport operations and improve accountability and efficiency.
The Special Adviser on Transportation, Dr. Obioma Nwogbo, noted that sensitization is ongoing to ensure a smooth transition, with support arrangements for elderly and non-digitally inclined residents.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Uche, urged parents to present children between nine months and fourteen years for the ongoing Measles and Rubella vaccination, emphasizing its safety and importance.
The decisions reflect the state government’s broader policy focus on economic modernization, digital transformation and public health protection.
