The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, has called on political leaders to place Nigeria’s national interest above partisan considerations and embrace issue-based politics ahead of the next general elections.
Senator Usman, made the call while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the 80th birthday celebration of the former Governor of Plateau State, Jonah David Jang in Jos, Plateau State.
She said political competition is vital to democracy but must not be allowed to degenerate into bitterness, hatred or actions capable of undermining national unity.
Senator Usman stressed that elections should be contests of ideas, competence and character, rather than battles against fellow Nigerians.
The Labour Party Chairman said Nigerians deserve leaders who unite the country, inspire hope and build bridges across political, ethnic and religious divides.
She urged politicians and their supporters to reject inflammatory rhetoric and embrace tolerance, mutual respect and peaceful engagement, noting that democracy flourishes where differing opinions are respected.
Senator Usman also called on political actors to strengthen democratic institutions and always put the country’s interest ahead of personal and partisan ambitions.
Reflecting on the 80th birthday of Senator Jang, she described the former military officer, former Governor of Plateau State and former Senator as a patriotic leader whose life of discipline, sacrifice and public service continues to inspire younger generations.
She prayed for God’s continued blessings, good health and many more years of service to the nation for the elder statesman.
