The Federal Government has announced plans to build a new dam in Limpye, Kanke Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, made this known during an inspection of the proposed Limpye Dam site.
Professor Utsev said the visit was in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to assess dams across the country for rehabilitation and new development.
The Minister said work on the Limpye Dam would begin after feasibility studies, engineering designs and Federal Executive Council approval.
According to him, the dam will provide clean water, support irrigation farming, create jobs and boost hydropower generation.
Prof. Utsev also said the Mangu Dam in Pankshin Local Government Area is 90 per cent completed and will soon be commissioned to improve water supply, irrigation and electricity generation.
He added that work is progressing on the rehabilitation of the Alau Dam in Borno State, while other dam projects are ongoing across the country.
Speaking during the visit, the National Chairman of the African Progressive Congress, APC, Professor, Nentawe Yilwatda said the proposed dam would improve water supply, support economic activities and provide pipe-borne water to many communities in Kanke and surrounding areas.
On his part, the Director of Dams and Reservoir Operations, in the ministry, Ali-Ibrahim Dallah, said the visit was to assess the suitability of the site before detailed studies and engineering designs begin.
The delegation which comprises the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, senior ministry officials and technical experts also visited the Golong Ngas, Chief Jika Golit, to seek the support of the traditional institution for the successful execution of the project.
