The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, has deployed a team of experts to Niger State to investigate the deaths of detained persons arrested over alleged illegal mining activities.
Alake, in a condolence message to the Niger State Government and people, expressed shock and sadness over the incident, describing the loss of lives as a painful tragedy.
The Minister said the deployment of the team was to establish the facts surrounding the deaths and determine the circumstances that led to the incident.
According to him, the team will work with other investigators already looking into the matter and provide a comprehensive report.
Alake also supported the decision by Governor Bago to declare a period of mourning and set up an investigative framework.
He stressed the need for a thorough, transparent and independent investigation to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in detention and correctional facilities.
The Minister said the development was particularly important because the deceased were reportedly arrested on suspicion of engaging in illegal mining.
He expressed sympathy to the affected families and prayed for comfort for them and eternal rest for the departed.
The Minister commiserated with the Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, the bereaved families and communities affected by the incident.
