The Labour Party has urged Nigerias to remain hopeful about the nation’s future despite prevailing economic and security challenges.
This is contained in statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, in Abuja
The statement describes June 12 as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a reminder of the sacrifices made by pro-democracy heroes.
According to the statement, the pays tribute to late Chief MKO Abiola and other patriots who fought for the restoration of democratic rule, saying their courage and sacrifices laid the foundation for the democracy Nigerians enjoy today.
It states that while Nigeria’s democratic experience has witnessed setbacks and unfulfilled expectations, citizens must not lose faith in the possibility of a better nation.
The statement notes that democracy remains the most effective system of government because it gives citizens a voice in governance and places the people at the centre of public affairs.
It, however, calls on government at all levels to intensify efforts toward addressing insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, hunger and infrastructure deficits affecting millions of Nigerians.
The statement stresses that the true dividends of democracy should be reflected in improved living conditions and greater opportunities for ordinary citizens.
According to the statement, the party also reiterated its commitment to the principles of equal opportunity and social justice, describing them as essential pillars of a functional democratic system.
It warns that democracy cannot thrive where citizens and political actors do not enjoy a level playing field, fairness and equal access to opportunities.
As the country moves closer to another election cycle, the Labour Party urges Nigerians not to surrender to hopelessness but to remain actively engaged in the democratic process.
The statement pledges to continue providing a credible political platform through which the aspirations of Nigerians can be pursued and realised.
It further expresses confidence that leaders of integrity, competence and capacity can help reposition the country for prosperity, justice and national renewal.
