The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Dr. Agbo Major, has called on Nigerians to defend democracy and ensure that political power returns to the people ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a Democracy Day message commemorating the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Dr. Major describes the poll won by the late Chief MKO Abiola as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history, noting that it symbolized national unity, hope, and the collective will of the people.
The statement says the annulment of the election remains a painful reminder that democracy can only thrive when the mandate freely given by citizens is respected.
According to him, elections must be peaceful, transparent, credible, and free from intimidation, manipulation, and vote-buying, stressing that no citizen should be compelled to exchange their future for temporary financial inducements.
According to the statement, the NNPP chairman emphasizes that politicians should not be allowed to purchase mandates that rightfully belong to the electorate.
It expresses concern over Nigeria’s current challenges, including insecurity, economic hardship, rising inflation, high cost of living, and declining public confidence in government institutions.
The statement says the country is facing an urgent leadership challenge that must be addressed through responsible and people-oriented governance.
Reflecting on the sacrifices made by Chief MKO Abiola, his wife, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, and other democracy activists, Dr. Major urges Nigerians to draw lessons from their struggles and commitment to democratic ideals.
It calls on citizens to remain vigilant and courageous in confronting individuals and groups whose actions undermine national unity, cohesion, and development.
“As we look towards 2027, Nigeria must return power to the people. Democracy must serve the poor, protect the vulnerable, secure our communities, and deliver a government that works for all Nigerians,” he states.
The statement maintains that Nigerians have a collective responsibility to rescue the country from its present challenges and build a better future for generations yet unborn.
“I wish Nigerians a happy Democracy Day and urged them to remain committed to the ideals of justice, freedom, and good governance.
