The Enugu State Government has raised concerns over accountability and transparency in electricity tariff classifications, particularly for consumers placed under the Band A category who are expected to receive a minimum of 20 hours of power supply daily.
The concern was expressed during a stakeholders’ engagement on electricity supply held in Enugu, where officials questioned the basis for the band classification system introduced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.
Under the tariff structure, electricity consumers are grouped into Bands A to E depending on the number of supply hours they are expected to receive each day.
Customers in Band A pay the highest tariff due to the expected minimum of 20 hours of electricity.
However, the state government noted that many residents classified under Band A continue to experience supply far below the stipulated hours, raising concerns about the accuracy and fairness of the classification.
The government therefore called on electricity distribution companies and regulators to improve transparency and ensure that tariff categories reflect the actual quality and duration of electricity supplied to consumers.
