The Labour Party has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for correcting the omission of its candidate from the list of contestants for the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election scheduled for June 20, 2026.
The party said the initial exclusion occurred despite its compliance with all constitutional and electoral requirements for participation in the poll.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, in Abuja, the party notes that following engagements with INEC’s leadership, the oversight was rectified and its candidate was subsequently included in the election.
The statement describes the development as a demonstration of the Commission’s commitment to fairness, justice, and due process, expressing confidence in the leadership of INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan.
According to the statement, the decision has helped reinforce public trust in the electoral process and ensured a level playing field for all eligible contestants.
It also thanked its members, supporters, and well-wishers for their concern and steadfast support during the period of uncertainty surrounding its participation in the by-election.
It expresses optimism about its chances in the Enugu North poll and other forthcoming by-elections, including those in Nasarawa North and Rivers South-East Senatorial Districts.
The statement says the party remains committed to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy through credible participation in the electoral process and expressed hope that the elections would further deepen public confidence in democratic institutions.
