The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate has lauded the Arieli Foundation for Maternal and Child Health for launching its Safe Birthing Kits Initiative and Training Centre.
At the Launch in Aviation village in Kyami Abuja, Dr. Ali-Pate said the initiative is a major step in protecting the lives of mothers and newborns in Nigeria.
The Minister who was represented by Binta Idris noted that providing essential birthing kits and a dedicated training centre will improve access to safe delivery materials and equip healthcare workers with the skills needed for quality maternal care.
Professor Pate emphasised that the launch is more than the opening of a facility which reflects a shared commitment to reducing maternal and infant mortality while promoting safe and dignified childbirth.
The Minister congratulated the Arieli Foundation on the achievement, noting that the initiative could serve as a model for other organisations and strengthen maternal and child healthcare across the country.
Earlier, The Founder of the Arieli Foundation for Maternal and Child Health, Dr. Natasha Oyibo, has called on the Federal Government to allocate sufficient and dedicated resources toward improving maternal and child health outcomes in Nigeria.
Dr. Oyibo made the call during the launch of the Foundation’s Safe Birthing Kits Initiative and Training Centre at its headquarters.
She acknowledged ongoing efforts by the government to strengthen the healthcare sector but stressed that the persistently high rates of maternal and child mortality require more focused and sustained intervention.
According to her, targeted investment in maternal care services, skilled birth attendance, essential medical supplies, and the training of community health workers is critical to reducing preventable deaths among women and children.
She noted that maternal and child health must remain a national priority, backed by adequate funding, effective policy implementation, and accountability mechanisms.
Dr. Oyibo emphasised that no woman should die while giving life and no child should be denied a healthy start due to preventable causes.
She reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to partnering with government and other stakeholders to support efforts aimed at safeguarding the health and wellbeing of mothers and children across the country.
In her contribution, a member of the Arieli Foundation for Maternal and Child Health, Nancy Oyibo, says the essence of the Foundation’s launch of its Safe Birthing Kit and Training Centre is to address preventable maternal and newborn deaths in Nigeria.
She explained that years of community engagement revealed that many mothers and newborns face infections during childbirth due to the lack of basic sterile supplies and proper support.
According to her, the Safe Birthing Kit is a simple but impactful solution designed to promote cleaner and safer deliveries, particularly in underserved communities.
Ms. Oyibo also called for partnerships and support from government and other stakeholders, noting that reducing maternal and child mortality in the country requires collective effort and sustained investment.
