The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has officially recognised Professor Sadiq Gombe as the National Chairman of the social Democratic party following the implementation of a Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the party’s autonomy in determining its leadership.
The development comes after INEC removed the name of the former National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Gabam from its records effectively ending a prolonged leadership dispute within the party.
In a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Rufus Aiyenigba the SDP describes the move as a victory for the rule of law, party autonomy and democratic principles.
The statement says the commission’s action aligns with the position of the Supreme Court that neither INEC nor the courts have powers to interfere in the internal affairs of political parties beyond the limits provided by the Constitution and the Electoral Act.
According to the statement, the leadership crisis that rocked the party was externally induced and had now been resolved, paving the way for internal stability and strategic preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It maintains that the recognition of Professor Sadiq Gombe has strengthened the party’s structure and repositioned it for greater political engagement and national relevance.
The statement also reaffirms its support for its 2023 presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo describing him as a credible leader with the competence to address Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
The statement commends INEC for what it described as a renewed commitment to respecting judicial decisions and the constitutional rights of political parties to manage their affairs without undue interference.
According to the statement, the SDP expresses hope that the electoral body would sustain this approach in its dealings with all political parties, in line with its constitutional mandate as an independent umpire.
It further states that the party remains committed to deepening Nigeria’s democracy and providing a platform for citizens seeking alternatives to poverty, insecurity and poor governance.
According to the statement, the National Working Committee under Professor Sadiq Gombe assures party members and supporters across the country of its commitment to party unity, democratic consolidation and the advancement of national development.
- It adds that its long-term objective remains the implementation of the Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy as enshrined in Chapter Two of the 1999 Constitution.
