The Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has called on women to take a more active role in politics and leadership, noting that meaningful change can only occur when women participate directly in decision-making processes.
In a statement to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day, Dr. Soludo said there is a need to move beyond discussions on gender equality to practical actions that will expand opportunities for women and girls.
She also commended the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for proposing legislation that would guarantee a mandatory number of seats for women in the National Assembly, describing the initiative as a step toward fair representation.
Dr. Soludo urged that similar provisions should be considered for State Houses of Assembly to strengthen women’s participation in governance at all levels.
She highlighted initiatives of the Anambra State Government aimed at improving the welfare of women and girls, including free education, free antenatal and delivery services, cervical cancer screening programmes and the establishment of a special court to address gender-based violence.

The governor’s wife added that her non-governmental initiative, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, also promotes healthier lifestyles and community-based programmes for women across the state.
