The Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, for the 2027 election, Mr. Peter Obi has called for a return to the credibility and transparency that characterised the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
In a Democracy Day message shared on his X platform, Obi urges Nigerians to use the June 12 celebration as an opportunity to reflect on the state of the nation’s democracy and governance.
He says Democracy Day should inspire citizens to assess whether current electoral processes reflect the transparency and public confidence associated with the historic 1993 election.
According to him, June 12 remains a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a reminder of the power of the collective will of the people.
Obi notes that the date is more than a national holiday, describing it as the foundation of Nigeria’s modern democratic identity and a symbol of both sacrifice and democratic triumph.
He says the significance of June 12 lies in its enduring message that the voices and votes of citizens must remain the cornerstone of governance.
According to his X handle, the former Labour Party presidential candidate stresses the need to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure that government remains accountable to the people.
Obi further urges Nigerians not to lose hope in the nation’s future, expressing confidence that a more democratic, transparent and prosperous Nigeria is achievable.
He maintains that the lessons of June 12 should guide the country as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections.
According to him, Nigeria must strive to replicate the credibility, inclusiveness and public trust that made the June 12, 1993 election a reference point in the nation’s democratic history.
Obi reaffirms belief that a new Nigeria built on democratic values, accountability and good governance remains possible.
