The National Welfare Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Rosemary Effiong, has called on Nigerians to uphold the ideals of democracy and honour the sacrifices of those who fought for democratic governance in the country.
In her Democracy Day message marking the June 12 celebration, Effiong describes the date as a symbol of patriotism, resilience, and the collective determination of Nigerians to defend their right to choose their leaders.
The statement says June 12 remains one of the most significant milestones in Nigeria’s political history, representing the triumph of the people’s will and the struggle for justice, freedom, and democratic rule.
According to her, the June 12 movement united Nigerians across ethnic, religious, and regional lines in pursuit of a common democratic aspiration.
The statement notes that many Nigerians paid the ultimate price during the struggle, while others endured imprisonment, persecution, intimidation, and economic hardship in the fight to restore democracy.
It stresses that as the nation marks Democracy Day, Nigerians must remember the sacrifices of those whose courage and commitment laid the foundation for the democratic system in place today.
The statement urges citizens across the country to observe a minute of silence in honour of all those who lost their lives in the struggle, describing it as a fitting tribute to the nation’s democratic heroes.
It, however, notes that the true significance of June 12 goes beyond remembrance, stressing that democracy must be reflected in good governance, accountability, transparency, justice, security, and respect for the rule of law.
According to Effiong the sacrifices associated with June 12 place a responsibility on leaders to govern with integrity and on citizens to remain active participants in the democratic process.
It observes that more than three decades after the historic events, many Nigerians still yearn for a nation where justice prevails, opportunities are available to all, and government remains accountable to the people.
According to her, Democracy Day provides an opportunity for reflection on past sacrifices, gratitude to those who stood firm during difficult times, and renewed commitment to building a better Nigeria.
The statement expresses optimism that the lessons of June 12 would continue to inspire unity, good governance, and national development, while urging Nigerians to protect and strengthen democracy for future generations.
