The Nigeria Democratic Congress on Saturday zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term, in a move that could reshape opposition politics ahead of the next general election.
The decision was reached during the party’s National Convention held in Abuja, where delegates adopted a motion moved by the member representing Ogbaru Constituency of Anambra State in the 10th National Assembly, Afam Victor Ogene.
The announcement was formally made by the NDC National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, who said the arrangement was part of the party’s broader power-sharing formula aimed at balancing regional interests within the opposition coalition.

Cleopas said it was also resolved that after the four-year single term, the presidential ticket would be automatically zoned to the North.
“It will be the turn of the North in 2031,” Cleopas announced.
The National Executive Committee also ratified the election of members of the party’s National Working Committee during the convention.

The development is expected to clear the way for former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and other southern aspirants to purchase and process the party’s presidential nomination forms.
The zoning decision comes amid intensified political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition figures seeking a common platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Meanwhile, Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso have formally joined the NDC, urging party members to avoid internal litigation and focus on national development.

The two opposition heavyweights made the appeal on Sunday in Abuja during their formal reception into the party.
Obi, who addressed party leaders and supporters at the event, said their decision to join the NDC was driven by the need for a peaceful political platform devoid of internal crises.
