Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has officially resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet to pursue the governorship of Bauchi State in the 2027 elections. The Ministry confirmed the development on Monday through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who said Tuggar had formally submitted his resignation.Vanguard reports that the minister handed over his resignation letter to the President shortly after noon and intends to run under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Tuggar’s exit followed a directive issued earlier this month by the Presidency.
Through the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, political appointees seeking elective offices were instructed to step down by March 31, 2026.
The directive covers ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior and junior special assistants, personal aides, and heads of federal agencies.
It is anchored in Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and aims to eliminate potential conflicts of interest ahead of the 2027 elections.
