The Kano State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdulsalam, over allegations of financial misconduct.
The Majority Leader of the House, Lawan Hussaini, disclosed this on Thursday while reading a petition from the state executive before lawmakers.
He said the notice was issued in line with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).
According to the petition, Abdulsalam allegedly committed financial irregularities during his tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs between 2023 and 2024, including the diversion of funds meant for the state’s 44 local government councils.
The allegations include the receipt of about N462 million in kickbacks between June 2023 and January 2024, as well as another N726 million reportedly collected from local government councils between February and July 2024 under the guise of executing special assignments.
The petition further accused the deputy governor of facilitating the improper release of N440 million to a pharmaceutical company in violation of public procurement regulations.
The Assembly said the actions amount to gross misconduct under the Constitution.
Abdulsalam has been given two weeks to respond to the allegations, while the impeachment notice was reportedly endorsed by 38 of the 40 members of the House.
