The Labour Party has congratulated President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, on winning the 2026 Arthur Svensson International Prize, describing the award as a global recognition of his longstanding commitment to workers’ rights, social justice and democratic freedoms.
A statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ken Eluma Asogwa in Abuja, says the conferment of the prestigious award in Oslo, Norway, represents a proud moment for the Nigerian labour movement and the party’s enduring alliance with organised labour.
The statement notes that Ajaero’s recognition reflects his decades of courageous advocacy for workers’ welfare, fair wages and the protection of democratic space, adding that his leadership has continued to inspire millions of workers within and outside Nigeria.
According to the statement, Ajaero’s emergence as the first Nigerian labour leader to receive the Arthur Svensson International Prize underscores his outstanding contributions to the advancement of labour rights and social justice.
It further describes the award as a testament to Ajaero’s fearless opposition to policies considered detrimental to the welfare of ordinary Nigerians and his unwavering dedication to the dignity of labour.
The statement expresses confidence that the international honour would further strengthen the NLC President’s resolve to continue championing the cause of Nigerian workers and promoting social and economic justice.
