The Labour Party, LP, has unveiled Hajja Bintu Konto as its vice presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, to run alongside the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke.
This is contained in a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ken Eluma-Asogwu in Abuja.
The statement says the choice of Konto followed extensive consultations with stakeholders and was aimed at presenting Nigerians with a ticket built on competence, integrity, inclusiveness and proven leadership.
It describes Konto as a seasoned public health expert and humanitarian leader with more than three decades of experience in healthcare delivery, community development and humanitarian interventions.
According to the statement, Konto has served in several strategic positions during her career with Catholic Relief Services, where she coordinated engagements with governments, traditional institutions, civil society organisations and local communities on health, nutrition, water, sanitation and humanitarian programmes.
The statement notes that she played key roles in humanitarian responses across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states, leading interventions that impacted thousands of vulnerable Nigerians, including internally displaced persons.
It further states that Konto, a trained nurse, midwife and public health specialist, holds a Master’s degree in Public Health and has contributed to the training of health professionals as a lecturer in community health.
According to statement she currently serves as a member of the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund in Nigeria and National Treasurer of the Association of Civil Society Organisations for Malaria Control, Immunisation and Nutrition (ACOMIN).
The statement explains that her experience in humanitarian coordination, governance engagement, women’s empowerment and public policy implementation would strengthen its vision of rebuilding Nigeria.
It adds that her nomination reflects the party’s commitment to gender inclusion, national unity and competent leadership.
The statement calls on Nigerians to support the Okereke-Konto ticket, expressing confidence that the duo would provide purposeful leadership, improve security, revive the economy and promote responsible governance.
