The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, DSVA, has referred allegations arising from resurfaced social media posts linked to singer Simi to the Commissioner of Police for preliminary investigation.
Executive Secretary of the agency, Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, stated this during a televised interview, stating that the agency could not ignore public concerns generated by the circulation of screenshots of old tweets allegedly dating back to 2012 and 2014.
The controversy followed recent comments by the singer condemning rape and advocating strict penalties for offenders.
Subsequently, older posts attributed to her surfaced online, some of which referenced interactions with children at a daycare reportedly managed by her mother.
The posts triggered criticism from some social media users who interpreted them as inappropriate.
In response, the singer clarified on her social media platforms that the posts reflected her youthful expressions at the time and were not written from any perverse intent, maintaining that they had been taken out of context.
Vivour-Adeniyi said the agency had monitored developments, including claims that some of the resurfaced posts may have been altered.
However, given concerns around safeguarding and child protection, the matter was escalated for independent scrutiny.
She explained that the case has been referred to the police for preliminary inquiry, while the state’s safeguarding taskforce responsible for implementing child protection orders has also been briefed.
Preliminary investigations, she said, are ongoing.
The agency emphasised that its action is procedural and aimed at ensuring due process.
Vivour-Adeniyi noted that any potential prosecution would depend on the existence of a complainant and verifiable evidence.
She urged anyone who may have been affected to come forward to provide statements, stressing that institutions have a duty to act on safeguarding concerns while upholding fairness, transparency and the rule of law.
