The Nigeria Democratic Congress has condemned the alleged arrest and detention of one of its members, Faruk Ozigi Onimisi, by security operatives in Kogi State.
This is contained in a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, in Abuja.
The statement alleges that Onimisi, who recently defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress. APC, to the NDC, was taken from his residence in Kubwa, Abuja, and moved to Lokoja.
It claims that he is being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department without access to his family, lawyers or formal charges, describing the development as a violation of his fundamental human rights.
According to the statement, the arrest may be linked to plans for a civic protest in the state.
It calls on authorities in Kogi State to either release him immediately or charge him to court if there is any case against him.
The statement also accuses the state government of intimidation and harassment of opposition members, warning that it may seek legal redress if such actions continue.
It urges its supporters in Kogi State to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding while the matter is being addressed.
