The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, says it generated N8.529 billion from nomination forms, dues, levies and contributions within its first seven months of operation.
The party also disclosed that it spent N2.402 billion on primaries, publicity, staff salaries and other activities within the period under review.
The figures were contained in the party’s financial statement presented by the National Treasurer, Dr Peter Onigah, at the NDC National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja on Monday.
The disclosure formed part of the party’s effort to promote transparency and accountability in the management of its resources ahead of its first anniversary.
NDC National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, said the decision was taken to allow members know how the party’s common resources were being managed.
Cleopas said the disclosure was not prompted by allegations on social media, noting that the party would still submit its properly audited accounts to the appropriate government institutions when due.
He said although political parties were required to present their financial reports to relevant authorities annually, the NDC considered it important to account to its members ahead of the statutory deadline.
According to him, members have the right to know how resources entrusted to the party are being managed, adding that accountability would remain a key principle of the party’s administration.
Also speaking, Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central and a member of the NEC, described the disclosure as a demonstration of transparency capable of building public confidence in the party.
Umeh said the report had enabled members to understand the party’s financial position instead of relying on speculation, but appealed to the leadership to allocate an appropriate share of funds generated from state chapters to them.
Responding, Cleopas said the issue of funding for state chapters was already under consideration, assuring that states would receive their legitimate share in line with the party’s constitution and objectives.
The chairman also said the party’s reconciliation committee had visited the geopolitical zones to engage aggrieved aspirants, while regular meetings were being held at the national secretariat to resolve disagreements.
Cleopas urged members to set aside their differences and work for the victory of all NDC candidates, declaring that the party was determined to win the 2027 elections and form the next government.
