The Nigeria Democratic Congress has constituted a National Selection Committee to oversee the screening and selection of aspirants for the forthcoming governorship and National Assembly primaries.
The party said the move was part of efforts to strengthen internal democracy, transparency, and credibility in its candidate selection process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to a statement signed by the National Secretary of the party, Ikenna Enekweizu, in Abuja, the committee was approved by the National Leader of the party following recommendations from the National Working Committee (NWC).
The committee is expected to review and scrutinize reports submitted by the National Screening Committee and take final decisions on the screening outcomes of all aspirants seeking the party’s ticket.
According to the statement, Former senator, Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, will chair the 20-member committee, while Ikenna Enekweizu will serve as secretary.
Other members include Comrade Babatunde Ali, Alhaji Sidi Abdul Bomi, Alhaji Mohammed Bakin Zuwo, Dr. Danlami Arabs, Chief Teddy Obey, Mrs. Adedayo Ekong, Yenusa Tanko, Buba Galadima, Prof. Udenta Udenta, and Dr. Grace Onyekusiobi, among others.
The statement appeals to aspirants, stakeholders, and members for patience and cooperation, citing the tight timelines required to complete the exercise.
It says the process was designed to encourage consensus-building and ensure the emergence of widely acceptable candidates through a credible and transparent mechanism.
The statement further states that only aspirants cleared by both the National Screening Committee and the National Selection Committee would be eligible to purchase nomination forms.
It adds that where consensus arrangements fail, direct primaries would be conducted between May 28 and 30, 2026, in line with the party’s guidelines.
According to the statement, the National Selection Committee will be formally inaugurated on Monday, May 25, 2026, after which it will immediately commence its assignment.
The statement reaffirms its commitment to an inclusive and transparent primary process aimed at strengthening unity within its ranks and positioning the NDC for electoral success in 2027.
