Leaders of Nigeria’s main opposition parties met in Abuja to address the recently amended Electoral Act 2026 and other electoral matters.
The joint news conference, themed “Urgent Call to Save Nigeria’s Democracy,” brings together former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former ministers Rauf Aregbesola and Rotimi Amaechi, former Cross River Governor Liyel Imoke, and Sen. David Mark, National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Others at the meeting include Dr. Ahmed Ajuji of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), former Senator Dino Melaiye, and Yunusa Tanko.
The National Assembly passed the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill on February 17, with provisions including the electronic transmission of election results in real time.
The bill, including Section 60(3), was signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on February 18.
The opposition leaders raised concerns over the amendment’s implications for transparency and accountability in upcoming elections.
