The Presidency has described the reported defection of Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, as a major political setback for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
In a statement posted on social media, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the governor’s move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) strengthens the ruling party’s structure in Adamawa State.
Onanuga stated that the development weakens Atiku’s political base, noting that several state officials and party stakeholders were said to have moved alongside the governor.
He argued that the shift could affect the former vice president’s prospects ahead of the next presidential election cycle.
The presidential spokesman further suggested that Atiku should reassess his political ambitions, contending that a candidate without strong home-state support may face challenges on the national stage.
The remarks signal heightened political exchanges as alignments and defections continue to shape preparations for the forthcoming elections.
