The Social Democratic Party says it has begun preparations for its forthcoming national convention with the inauguration of a committee to oversee the process.
National Chairman of the party, Professor Sadiq Gombe, stated this shortly after the party’s successful participation in the ongoing annual inspection and verification exercise conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja.
Professor Gombe said the committee would coordinate activities leading to the convention, nominations and other party programmes.

According to him, the committee is chaired by Professor Usman Bugaji, while Mulikat Akanbi will serve as deputy chairman.
He added that Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi will serve as secretary alongside other party leaders and stakeholders.
The SDP National Chairman said invitations would soon be sent to stakeholders and members of the media to ensure transparency and proper coverage of the convention.
Professor Gombe noted that the party also fully complied with the INEC verification exercise by submitting all required documents.

He said the exercise included identification of members through valid means such as voter’s cards, driver’s licences and international passports.
According to him, the party currently has about fifteen million registered members across the country.
He added that membership registration is still ongoing ahead of future congresses, conventions and primary elections in 2026.
Professor Gombe said members of the party’s National Executive Committee, state chairmen, zonal leaders and other representatives were present during the verification exercise.
He described the process as peaceful, transparent and successful.

The SDP chairman maintained that internal party matters, including leadership issues, congresses and disciplinary actions, remain the responsibility of the party in line with its constitution.
He urged the public and the media to rely on verified information and disregard misinformation on social media.
Professor Gombe reaffirmed the party’s commitment to strengthening its structures and building a solid platform for future political activities.
