The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has frowned over the worsening insecurity across Nigeria, describing the situation as a failure of governance and a breach of the constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property.
This is contained in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, in Abuja.
The statement says the rising cases of banditry, kidnappings, and communal violence have significantly undermined the value of human life in the country.
It notes that attacks on communities, abductions of citizens, and displacement of farmers have continued across several regions, affecting livelihoods and worsening poverty levels.
According to the statement, the persistent insecurity reflects what it described as a lack of political will rather than lack of capacity on the part of government.
The statement also criticises certain government responses to insecurity, including the handling of ransom payments, amnesty programmes for armed groups, and what it termed inconsistent enforcement of justice.
The statement proposes a shift from reactive security measures to a more comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of violence such as poverty, inequality, and marginalisation.
It advocates reforms to depoliticise security institutions, improve accountability in governance, and prioritise citizens’ welfare in line with constitutional provisions.
The statement also emphasises the need for transparency, community participation, and youth engagement as part of a broader strategy to strengthen national security and socio-economic development.
According to the statement, the rising poverty levels, high cost of living, and infrastructural challenges, has contributed to instability and low productivity.
The statement calls on Nigerians to be more deliberate in their electoral choices ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging a focus on leadership that prioritises security, economic growth, and social welfare.
It maintains that a people-centred governance model, backed by clear policy direction and accountability, is essential to restoring public confidence and ensuring long-term national stability.
