The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has commended Nigerian security agencies for the successful rescue of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State after more than 56 days in captivity.
This is contained in a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, in Abuja.
The statement describes the operation as a demonstration of professionalism, unity of purpose and effective inter-agency collaboration by security forces.
It notes that the rescue followed a month-long intelligence-driven military operation that led to the freedom of the 44 schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
According to the statement, while the abduction was a major embarrassment to the nation and underscored government’s challenges in protecting lives and property, the successful rescue showed that insecurity could be tackled through political will and effective deployment of national resources.
It says the operation reinforces its position that Nigeria’s security challenges can be overcome through responsible leadership, commitment to national interest and efficient governance.
The statement, however, expresses sadness over the death of 28-year-old Army officer, Lieutenant Felix Ademe Isaac, who was killed during the rescue mission.
It describes the late officer as a hero who paid the supreme price in service to the nation and extended condolences to his family and the Nigerian Armed Forces.
While celebrating the reunion of the rescued victims with their families, the party urges government at all levels to intensify efforts at addressing poverty, hunger and social injustice, which it identified as major drivers of insecurity across the country.
The statement also calls for renewed commitment towards ensuring the safety of lives and property and achieving sustainable national transformation.
“The sacrifice of Lieutenant Isaac and other fallen heroes will forever be remembered in the nation’s quest for peace and security,” the statement adds.
