The Federal Government is exploring the integration of solid minerals and tourism development through a proposed Geo-tourism Plan designed to unlock the economic potential of Nigeria’s mineral resources and create new investment opportunities across the country.
The initiative was unveiled during a courtesy visit by the Director-General of NTDA, Mr. Ola Awakan, to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, in Abuja.
Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Alake reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting the Authority in promoting and developing Nigeria’s tourism assets.
He noting that tourism remains a strategic sector capable of complementing the Federal Government’s economic diversification efforts.
The minister said Nigeria’s vast mineral endowments and unique geological formations present enormous opportunities for the development of geo-tourism destinations that can attract both local and international visitors.
He stressed the need for stronger inter-agency collaboration to unlock the economic potential embedded in the country’s natural resources, adding that the proposed partnership aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda of expanding non-oil revenue sources.
A major highlight of the engagement was the discussion on the development of a Geo-tourism Plan aimed at promoting sustainable destination development, stimulating investments, creating jobs, and opening new opportunities for economic growth in mining communities.
On his part, the NTDA Director-General commended the Minister for his support for tourism development and his efforts at repositioning the solid minerals sector as a key contributor to national development.
Mr. Awakan noted that integrating tourism with the solid minerals sector would help showcase Nigeria’s rich geological heritage while promoting community development and environmental sustainability.
Both parties pledged to strengthen collaboration and work towards unlocking the full potential of Nigeria’s tourism and mineral resources for sustainable national development.
In recognition of his longstanding support for the tourism industry, the NTDA Director-General decorated Dr. Alake as a Tourism Ambassador.
