Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, says the inclusion of both electronic and manual transmission of election results in the amended Electoral Act is aimed at preventing voter disenfranchisement and reducing apathy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Dr. Tajudeen stated this while hosting Spain’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Felix Costales, at the National Assembly.
He explained that limiting result transmission strictly to electronic means would be impractical given Nigeria’s current level of internet coverage.
Citing data from the Nigerian Communications Commission, the Speaker noted that about 40 per cent of the country remains underserved in terms of internet penetration.
He argued that making electronic transmission the sole method could exclude voters in affected areas and undermine inclusivity.
Dr. Tajudeen also assured Nigerians that the 2027 polls would be more transparent and accommodating, referencing his discussions with the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
He added that the dual approach reflects the realities of infrastructure gaps while maintaining the commitment to technological improvements in the electoral process.
Earlier, Ambassador Costales said his visit was to strengthen bilateral relations between Spain and Nigeria, particularly in legislative diplomacy.
He reaffirmed Spain’s support for Nigeria’s democratic development and indicated that his country would closely follow the 2027 general elections.
