The Plateau State Government has announced the passing of Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni (rtd.), a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who died on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Useni as a pillar of service and leadership whose contributions to Nigeria’s development, particularly in security and politics, will remain etched in history.
Governor Mutfwang hailed the late Useni as a true statesman who devoted his life to the progress of Nigeria and the peace of Plateau State.
“General Useni’s legacy is one of selfless service, unwavering patriotism, and a commitment to the well-being of others. His role in promoting peace and stability in Plateau and Northern Nigeria cannot be overstated,” the Governor stressed.
Governor Mutfwang emphasized Useni’s role as a bridge-builder, noting his ability to navigate complex challenges with wisdom and compassion.
“His contributions to our state and the nation as a whole will continue to inspire future generations,” he added.
The Governor extended condolences to the late General’s family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the people of Plateau State. He prayed for God’s comfort for the bereaved and strength for the state to bear the loss.
Lt. Gen. Useni’s passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, dedication, and service to humanity. His impact on the military, politics, and his community will remain a beacon for others to follow.
During his illustrious career, Useni served as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT. In retirement, he ventured into politics, serving as Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later as a Senator representing Plateau South under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
