A former spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has predicted that the African Democratic Congress, ADC, may face internal crisis and possible defections after its national convention ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Baba-Ahmed made the assertion on Tuesday while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.
According to him, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is likely to emerge as the party’s presidential candidate, a development he believes could trigger a wave of resignations from aggrieved party members.
He said the ADC currently hosts several influential political figures with competing interests, warning that many would feel sidelined if Atiku secures the party’s ticket.
In his words, “ADC will bleed after its convention because almost certainly Vice President Atiku Abubakar will get the ticket. When he does, some people will walk out.”
Baba-Ahmed also spoke on the political stance of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, suggesting that his style may not align with the dynamics of a competitive party primary.
He noted that Obi is more accustomed to being adopted as a consensus candidate rather than contesting against several aspirants.
According to him, “Peter Obi doesn’t participate in a convention; he goes there to be anointed,” adding that such expectations could generate tension within the ADC.
The former Northern Elders Forum spokesman concluded that the clash of ambitions within the party could threaten its unity ahead of the 2027 general election.
