The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has projected normal annual rainfall for most parts of Nigeria in 2026,
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced at the agency’s Seasonal Climate Prediction presentation in Abuja.
The forecast highlights variations in rainfall across states, including early rains in Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and parts of central and northern Nigeria, while Borno State may experience a late onset.
A delayed end of the rainy season is expected in Lagos, Ogun, Anambra, Enugu, and other states.
NiMet also warned of severe dry spells in Oyo, Ogun, and parts of northern Nigeria, as well as a prolonged “August Break” in Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, and parts of Oyo.
Temperatures are expected to be warmer than average in the early months of the year.
The agency urged farmers and those relying on rain-fed agriculture to follow the predicted rainfall patterns or consult NiMet to avoid crop losses.
The SCP launch, marking NiMet’s 140 years of service, featured international partners, including the World Meteorological Organization, and recognized past agency leaders for their contributions.
