Organized labour in Nasarawa State has warned of an imminent indefinite industrial action if the state government fails to implement the recently agreed terms on the National Minimum Wage.
The State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Mohammed Doma, made this known during the launch of a laptop distribution initiative for civil servants in Lafia, the state capital.
According to him, workers will not accept anything less than the full implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed with the government.
Comrade Doma criticized the government for neglecting workers’ welfare, despite the sacrifices made by civil servants toward the state’s growth and development.
He described the recent strike as avoidable, blaming it on the absence of a sustainable policy to address workers’ needs.
The State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ismaila Okoh, represented by Vice Chairman Comrade Dinatu Samuel, urged civil servants to embrace modern technology and enhance their skills for effective service delivery in an increasingly digital world.
Also speaking at the event, the state Head of Service, Ms. Abigail Wayah, applauded the initiative, describing it as a reflection of Governor Abdullahi Sule’s commitment to repositioning Nasarawa State’s economy.
On his part, the Chairman of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Comrade Haruna Ewa, highlighted that the laptop distribution was designed to equip civil servants with essential digital skills, ensuring their relevance and effectiveness in the modern workforce.
“The initiative’s first phase will see over 200 civil servants receive laptops, with a monthly deduction of 11,200 Naira from their salaries over 24 months to cover the cost”
“The laptops, procured through the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, are part of efforts to align with the government’s digitization drive in the public sector”
